Chapter Eleven

“Kei!”

Kei groaned, rolling his head to the side, wincing at the steady strum of pain in his head.

“Kei. Damn it, man, you’ve got to wake up.”

Kei blinked open his eyes, groaning when someone shook him, igniting a new pain in his chest and shoulder. He waited as the images finally blurred into substance, a dimly lit room materializing out of the darkness. A face loomed over him, the familiar tilt of the man’s lips making Kei sigh.

“Greyson?” His throat protested the single word, the dry sensation making him cough.

“Here, try to drink some water.”

Greyson snugged an arm under his torso, lifting him enough to place a cup at his mouth—dribble some water across his lips. He swallowed a few sips, holding back a grunt as more pain thrummed through his body. Christ, he hurt.

Greyson tsked. “Of course you hurt, you stupid son of a bitch. You had a gaping wound across your chest and shoulder. Looked like you’d been struck with lightning. I healed you as best I could, but…” He sighed. “We both know healing was never my forte.”

Sadness touched the man’s words, a stark reminder of all he’d lost. The sister Kei hadn’t been able to save from Abaddon.

Kei attempted a small, half-smile. “Thinking you probably still saved my life, you bastard. Now, I owe you.”

Greyson chuckled. “You already owed me. Hasn’t made you visit, recently.”

Kei released a painful breath. “I would have come if I could have. That’s the purpose of being banished. You can’t leave…”

His voice trailed into a rasp. He was there. In the faery realm. But…

He pushed himself upright, trying to ignore the way the room swam as his vision dimmed. “What? How?” Memories shuffled inside his head, a single image replaying through his mind. “Gabriel!”

Greyson placed an arm across Kei’s chest. “Easy. Your friend’s okay, just…out. Been that way since you two materialized inside my damn home. One minute, I’m cooking dinner, the next there’s a flash of light, and you’re both crouched in the center of the room. He just looked at me, then keeled over.”

Greyson pointed at the far wall. Gabriel was sprawled across a lounge, arms and legs dangling off the edge. His wings covered half his body, the edges brushing the stone floor.

Greyson smiled. “I’ve never met a real angel before. Well, not one that wasn’t already fallen. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure any still existed.”

Kei snorted. “You’re a damn faery. Of course you knew they existed.”

“Hey. They haven’t been seen in centuries. That’s a long time, even for my species. And whether you want to acknowledge it or not, even angels can die, Kei.”

The words hit home, and he slumped back, allowing Greyson to shoulder his weight. “How long have we been here?”

“A few hours. Been trying to rouse you since I fixed that crater on your shoulder.” He arched a brow. “Want to tell me what happened? Why you’re paired up with an angel? After everything that happened with Abbadon…”

“Gabriel is nothing like that evil prick.”

Greyson held up on hand.
